Here’s our ‘dough ready’ box all prepped for these first few weeks of February. Mr 3 loves to see what surprises are inside the box, ready to play with, after I’ve changed it up. He’s particularly been enjoying the milk bottle tops as he’s realised these can do so many different things in play dough! Bell & Ribbons Ring on Elastic 🔔 • @theknowandplayspace

As Baby R is reaching 4 months, he’s beginning to have more coordination of his arms and hands, meaning he’s now trying hard to reach, grasp and hold onto things.

I made this tactile mobile by tying scraps of ribbon onto an old curtain ring, and then using elastic to first attach a bell, then attach the ring so that it hung from the play gym. The elastic means that Baby R can move with the ring in his hands, but also will allow him to bring it to his mouth to explore over the next few weeks, as I’m anticipating this to start happening more around 4-5 months.

Adding the bell onto the ring is also facilitating his learning about cause and effect - wiggling the ring causes the bell to make a noise, and therefore he’ll repeat his movements to try and make it happen again. This learning often begins around the 3-4 month mark and is fascinating to see how it continues to develop from this early stage, all the way then through childhood + beyond!

Musical Bear Hunt Story with @inswan_documentcamera 📹👂🏼🐻 • @theknowandplayspace

We used our new visualiser (kindly gifted) to create our own musical ‘We’re going on a Bear Hunt’ story 🤩 Technology exploration is an important part of early years development, and this was something so simple for Mr 3 to take part in.

We made our own stick puppets of the characters, searched round the house for props we could use whilst recalling the story, and then thought carefully about which instruments suited the noise of different parts. This was all before we even turned the visualiser on! So many learning opportunities and experiences from one activity together.

Mr 3 learnt how to press record, worked out how to get the props and puppets in the right place, and it was also a great learning discussion about how we need to tell the story ‘flat’ so the camera can see, rather than upright like we would usually use puppets.

His pride when watching back his finished video was so precious 🥹❤️

DIY Indoor Air Hockey 🏑 • @theknowandplayspace

We’re all about active play over here, and Mr 3 NEEDS to get out his energy during the day. Usually we’d be outside as much as possible, but the cold, wet and stormy weather is meaning it’s a bit more challenging when we have a teeny tot in tow too! So… we’re finding ways to use big energy and movements indoors!

This was SO much fun. We laughed and laughed and laughed together!!
Using @connetix_tiles we made two barriers and ‘goal’ ends, then grabbed a plastic lid and two toilet rolls to make our own air hockey style game 😂🏑
You could substitute all parts for other things that work eg. Wooden blocks or Duplo edges, a stuffed sock to bat with, a cardboard circle to hit… whatever you have & find works.

For older children, you may want to add a line of masking/painters tape across the middle of the play zone to give ‘halves’, but this wasn’t necessary for us to have fun!🤩

High Contrast Cards 👀 • @theknowandplayspace

High-contrast, monochrome patterns are so beneficial for young babies as the starkness in difference between the colours sends the strongest of signals to their brain. These signals help brain connections to continue to form and strengthen, as they aren’t complete at birth.

I could’ve bought a pack from the shop, or printed off ones I’ve made on the computer… BUT instead, I got Mr 3 involved and he was SO proud to have made an activity for his baby brother. I showed him how I’d used a black paint stick to make different patterns on the card, and then let him choose which pattern he’d like to create. He chose to do lots of his favourite marks to make at the moment - his own letter and crosses! What was even more lovely was that Baby R really did spend a good amount of time on his tummy looking at the card his brother had made for him, and Mr 3 realised this 🥹😍

@connetix_tiles Ball Maze ♾️ • @theknowandplayspace

We’re always thinking of new ways to play with our magnetic @connetix_tiles , and I suddenly had a wave of inspiration today to make a maze for the balls instead of just a ball run. We found out it worked well on our @goodevas slide board as we could tip it to move the ball.

Mr 3 loved this so much! After I did the first one, he very quickly worked out how to design his own mazes, and investigated with the ball coming out at different places. He particularly liked us both working together to move the ball to me and then all the way back to him! A nice way to work on teamwork, communication and coordination!

Next time we’ll try putting a football or similar underneath the board for more challenge as you’d have to keep it balanced then too!🤩

Bell Mobile 🔔 • @theknowandplayspace

Around 3 months, Baby R started reaching, batting with more intent and started the early stages of grasping. Having gone through all of our Montessori visual mobiles, it was time to begin the tactile ones now that he was starting to work on these new skills.

I attached some bells to long pieces of ribbon and then tied them around the play gym. I deliberately left them long so that he could grab the ribbons and the bells whilst he wiggled (though of course, as always, he had constant, vigilant supervision).

Bells are a wonderful resource because they make such a gentle noise, even with the smallest of movement. This makes them perfect for babies who are starting to learn about cause and effect - something that begins around 3-4 months. Baby R realised that when he wiggled and knocked the bells it made a noise, which encouraged him to therefore do this again. It’s the same with when he grabbed and shook the ribbons too! This meant he was not only working on that understanding of cause and effect, but his gross motor and auditory skills too.

MARK the wall 🖊️• @theknowandplayspace

With the weather SO stormy at the moment, it’s hard to get enough big movement during the day for an active little person… so we went BIIIIIG with our mark making.

I used painters tape to tape some rolls of paper up to the door (you could use a wall, but be careful the pens don’t go through!). I then found some tubes of varied lengths and thicknesses and attached felt tip pens to them. It’s important to use thick felt tips with early mark making as they make very evident marks easily - making it a positive and rewarding experience.

Although not shown in the video, it’s also great for little ones to practise making marks with their arm outstretched (no bend in the elbow), as this strengthens their shoulder muscles that they’ll need for writing in the future. Having the pens attached to long tubes helps this and makes it fun too!🤩

Mr 3 absolutely LOVES his @goodevas climbing frame, but what’s even better is that it can double up as a play gym for Mr 3 months when his brother isn’t clambering all over it 🤩😂

I added our rainbow rope lights, CDs attached to ribbons and linked glow sticks to the under side of the triangle frame, then popped a foil blanket over the top for ultimate reflective play fun. The squeals and wiggles of excitement were amazing! I’ll share them on my stories 🥹😍

You could of course use a normal play gym to do this from, but the bars of the frame gave me more options to hang things at 😜

We’re loving all things light play on these gloomy January days 💡 I’ve been eyeing up some @tts_resources glow resources to add to our collection! If you haven’t seen them… they look amaaazing!

We absolutely love playdough play here at The Know & Play Space, and particularly love how well it pairs with loose parts. This new series of videos features what we’re popping into our ‘Dough Ready’ box - something we have on the play shelves or in the cupboard ready to whip out when we need a calm moment, something to focus ourselves on, or purely just because we want to enjoy ourselves together through some mess-free sensory/creative play.

Rainbow Bauble Mobile 🌈 • @theknowandplayspace

Baby R’s favourite one yet!! 😍

I’ve loved making mobiles for Baby R and every one he’s enjoyed being under so much… but this one seems to absolutely captivate him, even more than any others have!

I used a wooden dowel ring and attached fillable baubles to it (the same from my Christmas mobile!). I then cut up some small pieces of cellophane and added them to each of the baubles. Using ribbon (all I had at the time) I then tied the wooden ring to a large split ring. I did this in a tripod-style so that the ring hung horizontally. Using the split ring means I can swap out the mobiles easily without having to take apart the play gym each time.

This looks particularly beautiful with the sunshine shining through the balls & colours… ☀️ although we haven’t had any sun for a while!

Maths & Listening Game with @connetix_tiles • @theknowandplayspace

Mr 3 loved this game so much he recreated it after we finished it himself for me to play 🥹

Using chalk pens, I wrote numbers he recognises onto our @connetix_tiles magnets and popped them over the holes of a muffin tray. I then gave him a collection of loose parts and some tongs to use. I called out a number and he had to find that number, open the magnetic tile like a door, and pop that many loose parts in. I added extra challenge to this by adding other elements to the instructions eg. “Can you put flowers under the door that’s red and has number 2 on it.” He therefore had to then listen to and remember 3 things + do the fine motor work!!

You could just give this as an independent activity, using one type of loose parts and just let your child pop the correct number each tile… but as we did this as an activity together, adding listening and remembering skills into it added a second dimension!

Just add LIGHTS ✨ • @theknowandplayspace

A simply sensory tray full of artificial snow, some scrap materials, loose parts… AND LIGHT FORMS 💡 = an enchanting Arctic play set up.

It may be freeeeezing outside but our wintery themed play felt cosy and magical. Mr 3 had been testing out the light colours and found the pale blue, saying it looked like ‘ice’. We talked about who lived in the ice and set up together a little small world, draping his icy lights around the table and the light panel for added effect. (They look as if they’re flashing in the video but they’re actually just on the icy blue setting!)

This new rope light has been used in SO many different ways already. Such a versatile resource. I’ll pop a link again in my stories ✨🌈 We’re using it here in addition to our @tickit_education light panel , another resource that’s totally worth the investment!

How AMAZING are these lights for enhancing play and making it feel enchantingly magical? And this building material pipe… an enticing chute for all sorts of trajectory play that’s for sure!

I spend a lot of time researching and investigating all about play, finding inspiration, learning more and delving deeper into understanding child development. I absolutely love it when I strike ✨goldust✨ - things that really resonate with me, or ignite my passions and fuel my own excitement. I love it even more that I can share these finds with you all too!

Recently I watched a few courses by @mulberry_house_playschool who are such an inspirational setting. (If you don’t follow them already, do!) The content really got me thinking about Mr 3’s needs, skills and interests, our play at home, The Know & Play Space as a whole and the goals I have for it as a business in the future. With this in mind, we’ll definitely be changing up play and resources at home as our first starting point - heading very much back to my roots and diving deeper into schema play in particular.

I’m sure you’ve realised from stories and me talking about it in the past, that Mr 3 is incredibly physical and needs a whole lot of active play throughout the day. Gross motor equipment and time to use it is always something that is highly prioritised in this house as it helps him to stay regulated, and SOOO many of you always ask what equipment we have/ I’d recommend.

Although we absolutely loved our previous set that was used every single day for over three years, it wasn’t providing anywhere near enough challenge for Mr 3 anymore. He was actually beginning to use it more unsafely because he was trying to challenge his own little body… something we hadn’t ever had an issue with before, so knew it was time to make a change!

Our new climbing equipment and hanging rings are from @goodevas - beautiful crafted and much more size & challenge-appropriate for Mr 3.

The pikler triangle is adjustable so can become different heights, dependent on your child’s confidence - meaning even beginner climbers could use it! We then added on the climbing rope ladder, climbing arch (which can also be a rocker), and the slide/stepped ramp. They kindly also sent us hanging rings which we’ve attached to the door frame, which Mr 3 absolutely loves 😍

House Maths 🏡 • @theknowandplayspace

Starting to practise number recognition and the value of numbers? Try THIS!

Make some little houses out of recycled cardboard boxes (and decorate if you’re feeling fancy 💁🏼‍♀️). For those starting out on their number journey, add placement spots that match the number you add onto the house, like you’ll see in the photos. For those more confident, just have the number on the houses!

To play: Tell a story as you walk around your ‘neighbourhood’. Perhaps Gruffalo is off to visit Snake’s house with Fox and Mouse BUT OH NO, there’s only 3 people allowed in this house. Can they all fit? Who else could Mouse visit instead? Support and extend your child’s learning through the questions you ask and story you help them tell.

Mr 3 loved this game back when we did it in the summer. Back then we were only walking with numbers 1-3 and had the placement spots to support, but now we can do 1-5 without. Progress happens and is so clear when you repeat activities. Repetition is so beneficial.

After a little modelling of how to balance one cup on two base cups, he was rapidly building towers and castles - loving how the colours glowed in the light. He then progressed to filling them with gems and other loose parts, and trying to balance things on top of each cup. I can’t wait to see how else we use these in this rotation!🤩

Learning Journal Scrapbooks 📖 • @theknowandplayspace

I’ve always kept a memory book for Mr 3, however since we started our kind-of ‘homeschool preschool’ journey in September, I began these learning journey scrapbooks with him. In there goes any pieces of physical learning eg. artwork or evidence of mark making, but I also print off photos of everything we did together and write a little about each experience - whether it was playing a maths game or heading to the zoo, as it’s important to remember that everything is part of the development journey ❤️

As Autumn came to an end, we said goodbye to the season in the forest over a hot chocolate, and had a look back through together over the wonderful things we’d done.

We’ve done so much work on the days, weather and seasons this year, and our @lovevery.europe has been such a big part of this. It’s now the first thing Mr 3 does each morning and it sets him up for the day, whilst also allowing us to open discussions for learning 🍂❄️

As Winter began in December, I started adding things into his next scrapbook and I’m already so excited to see the progress he’s made unfolding in front of me 😍

Making a scrapbook doesn’t have to be seasonal, you could do one for the whole year, or one per month… whatever suits you… but they are such amazing talking points and a lovely way to remember and recall all the things we got up to.

Learning Journal Scrapbooks 📖 • @theknowandplayspace

I’ve always kept a memory book for Mr 3, however since we started our kind-of ‘homeschool preschool’ journey in September, I began these learning journey scrapbooks with him. In there goes any pieces of physical learning eg. artwork or evidence of mark making, but I also print off photos of everything we did together and write a little about each experience - whether it was playing a maths game or heading to the zoo, as it’s important to remember that everything is part of the development journey ❤️

As Autumn came to an end, we said goodbye to the season in the forest over a hot chocolate, and had a look back through together over the wonderful things we’d done.

We’ve done so much work on the days, weather and seasons this year, and our @lovevery.europe has been such a big part of this. It’s now the first thing Mr 3 does each morning and it sets him up for the day, whilst also allowing us to open discussions for learning 🍂❄️

As Winter began in December, I started adding things into his next scrapbook and I’m already so excited to see the progress he’s made unfolding in front of me 😍

Making a scrapbook doesn’t have to be seasonal, you could do one for the whole year, or one per month… whatever suits you… but they are such amazing talking points and a lovely way to remember and recall all the things we got up to.

OT-style Indoor Gross Motor Activities • @theknowandplayspace

As part of our evening sensory circuits, we always have activities that are part of the ‘Organising’ section. These activities get Mr 3’s brain and body working, needing him to use his senses to stay balanced for example, whilst also colour matching or transferring. Here are the activities we’ve been enjoying the past few weeks: 👇🏽

1. Create an obstacle course where you collect bean bags, carry them round one in each hand, and then sort them into the correct colour hoops.
2. Balance along the bean to the correct colour cone (called out), then catch and throw back a ball.
3. Balance along a beam and use large tongs to collect a bean bags and place it on the right number (called out).
4. Collect a bean bags, roll on a peanut ball and balance whilst putting the beanbag into the matching cone/bucket.
5. Stand on a wobble cushion and use giant tongs to transfer balls from one container to another.
6. Balance along a beat whilst using giant tongs to transfer the balls from one container to another (the aim here is to go along the whole beam… but Mr 3 decided he’d throw the balls in from half way instead 😂)

These activities are great for developing whole body skills and can be done as stand alone! They needn’t be done as part of a sensory circuit like we do. Physical games are a great way of practising other skills such as number recognition, listening, concentration + so many more 🤩 GET THEM MOVING, GET THEM LEARNING 💪🏼🧠

REUSE THOSE GIFT BOXES AND TINS! The small ones, tall ones, short ones, wide ones, ones that slide open, twist open, unfold open. The ones shaped as stars, gingerbread men, houses, cuboids, hearts. The ones that are plain, that are shiny, that are patterned, made from metal, from plastic and from cardboard.

Containers have SO many play opportunities and are one of my favourite recycled resources. All year round I look for and keep interesting packaging for our collection, but Christmas is a particularly good time to do this when so many things come in fancy boxes and tins.

Don’t throw them away!!♻️ Watch the wonders of play happen with them instead 🤩

I couldn’t help myself doing a little Christmas DIY for Baby R’s play gym!🎄I filled some plastic baubles with jingle bells, pieces of sparkly fabric, mini pinecones and pieces of fir tree, then attached them onto a wooden ring so that it’ll rotate when hanging on his play gym. He was absolutely transfixed and stayed focused for so long 🤩

Tummy Time with Table Charger Plates • @theknowandplayspace

Today we did our first proper session of tummy time on the floor! Often very little babies aren’t too keen on tummy time on the floor, which is why with Baby R I’ve done all of it so far on my chest. At 2 months, he’s now able to hold his head up for short periods of time, so I wanted to begin some floor time on his front with engaging resources.

Today we got a little festive with our baby play, and I simply placed different cardboard charger plates in front of him. This red one particularly captivated him 🤩

I then added our @tickit_education sensory mirror balls as an additional element. These not only are wonderful visual stimuli, but also make different noises for that auditory development too. A resource that definitely makes it onto my TOP 10 list for babies!

Without wanting to wish my time away with this little dot, I am simultaneously SO excited to get back into baby play again and find lots of creative ways to support R’s development ✨

Sensory Circuits Play - Circuit 1 ✨ • @theknowandplayspace

As we’re learning more and more about Mr 3, we’re trying to put in place more things that help him, his body and how he works. Something that he really struggles with is winding himself down enough to go to sleep in the evenings. Your standard ‘bath, book, bed’ isn’t enough for him and his busy brain keeps him going for hours after bedtime usually! He also needs a tonne of movement and activity during the day (& even with this can still find it very tricky to shut off!).

In order to sleep, children need to be at a low level of something called ‘alertness’. Some children can lower this themselves and others, like Mr 3, often need support to do so. This is why we’ve introduced Sensory Circuits as part of our evening routine.

Sensory Circuits are sensory-based movement activities which help children to get to the right level of ‘alertness’ for the time of day. They’re made up of three parts: Alerting, Organising and Calming, and takes about 20 minutes to see through.

We started today with alerting by bouncing on the peanut ball and then rolling on his tummy to high 5 me across it. Then we moved onto an obstacle course - transporting Paw Patrol characters into the hoops. Then we calmed our bodies right down with some sensory lights and small-scale tray play with lentils. All of this he does with either J (Daddy)or myself.

It may not be quite how a trained OT would do it, but it’s what’s manageable and working for us at home. It’s a totally new area of learning for me but I am loving learning more about bodies, the senses and regulation! After this we have a warm bath, story with deep pressure cuddles and then it’s bedtime.

If you’ve got a child who LOVES to be active, this would be a great thing to do during the day as a way of offering controlled sensory input. Or, it might help your child to wind down a little more like it does for Mr 3!
